More informationVersatile, like the demands of tomorrow
The global market for linear actuators is currently experiencing remarkable growth. Demand for electric linear actuators, in particular, has increased significantly in recent years – a trend confirmed by numerous studies and market analyses. The reasons for this dynamic are manifold: higher energy efficiency, better controllability, easy integration into digital systems, and, last but not least, greater sustainability compared to pneumatic solutions. But are the available solutions really as comprehensive as they initially appear?
Less mass - more class
As impressive as the market figures are, in practice many drive systems quickly reach their limits. A survey by the PW Consulting Automotive & Machinery Research Center shows that 52% of integrators complain about the lack of modularly integrated guides or sensors and the associated high customization costs – and with good reason. The lack of standardized mounting options alone necessitates numerous customer-specific components. This results in setup costs in production lines, for example for medical devices, of up to $1.800 per axis, as the Research Center further reports. But this is precisely where LinMot comes in: with solutions that significantly reduce the effort for machine builders thanks to the standardized modular nature of the drive elements.
As Andreas Nowak, Managing Director of TEAM Automation BerlinAs explained, while custom solutions from machine manufacturers are possible, this also highlights one of the biggest problems with available drive solutions: “In pick-and-place applications, the Z-axis must also be equipped with a motor. However, this significantly increases the moving mass on the X-axis, which in turn necessitates a larger motor for this axis.” Especially with typical stroke lengths of around 200 mm, such cantilever designs lead to high moving masses, a large footprint, and insufficient rigidity – particularly in dynamic applications. LinMot's flat robots and systems address precisely this fundamental problem: They are extremely space-saving, modular in design, and engineered from the ground up for typical automation handling tasks.

"Of course, machine manufacturers can accept the high level of customization required and the associated costs, and implement their own solutions for simple handling tasks. However, in practice, the first hurdle quickly becomes apparent."

Dynamics meets flexibility
Another key challenge in automation is flexibility. The ever-increasing variety of components that need to be assembled quickly pushes conventional solutions to their limits: "If I have three differently positioned feeders to bring components together, I quickly reach the limits of pneumatics. LinMot axes, on the other hand, provide the necessary flexibility and also the required dynamics," explains Mr. Nowak. Indeed, LinMot flat robots and systems offer decisive advantages simply due to their motion structure: Compared to other kinematic systems, they are not only more energy- and cost-efficient, but also significantly more flexible in terms of workspace design. At the same time, they combine high speed with precise and repeatable motion control. This makes them ideally suited for applications that require exact movements and repeated positioning – from highly dynamic sorting and pick-and-place tasks to assembly, closing, screwing, and handling processes.

Another key advantage of LinMot flat robots and systems lies in their modular design. This allows the space-optimized LinMot linear motors, modules, and guides to be flexibly combined into proven Cartesian structures such as semi-gantry, gantry, or other multi-axis systems. This results in solutions that enable even complex, industry-specific requirements to be implemented quickly and precisely – while maintaining high dynamics. Despite the integration of multiple carriages and Z-axes, the flat robots and systems remain extremely compact, have minimal interference contours, and are easy to maintain and expand.

Also available in stainless steel!
For use in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries, the proven PR02 rotary actuator is now also available in a hygienic stainless steel version. This makes the PR02 even more versatile and resistant to cleaning agents, while requiring minimal maintenance.

More freedom through standards
Any machine manufacturer that wants to remain competitive can hardly avoid standardized drive components. The reason is obvious: Well-designed basic solutions not only save costs but also valuable design work. With its flat robots and systems, LinMot offers a broad portfolio of basic configurations that combine dynamics and precision in the smallest possible installation space. "Because a lot is also determined by the product. For our product on this system, we needed very narrow handling units. Here, the LinMot solutions are perfect in their basic design," confirms Mr. Nowak, highlighting the advantages. This is complemented by numerous options – such as external encoders, force or torque sensors, hollow shafts with air passages, or pre-assembled drag chain solutions – which further increase flexibility. This creates the perfect combination of standard and individuality: Specific requirements can be met without losing sight of rapid implementation.
